Opening night of much-hyped Seventh Fatah Congress a perplexing snooze (The Times of Israel)
The most high-level invitee to talk during the opening night was Nickolay Mladenov, the United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East Process. He opened by calling Fatah “the soul of the Palestinian people, just as the Palestinian people are the soul of the Arab nation.” This won him applause. A bit of balanced diplomatic-speak, “Never give up until the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. A state that lives in peace, in security and mutual recognition with Israel,” was met with silence.

Abbas: We will join all 522 international organizations (Jerusalem Post)
The Palestinian leadership plans to continue its strategy to internationalize the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by joining international institutions, PA President Mahmoud Abbas said during a long speech at the seventh Fatah General Congress in Ramallah on Wednesday...
...Later in Thursday’s speech, Abbas admitted that “popular resistance” has not taken off in Palestinian society, but said he wants to see it play a larger role in the coming years. “Where is popular, peaceful resistance? Go out to [the streets],” he said. “I say, go out; no one goes out.”...
...The congress, which will elect delegates to Fatah’s top two leadership bodies, the Central Committee and the Revolutionary Council, has excluded Fatah leaders allied with Dahlan and many other leaders critical of Abbas’s leadership.

The leaders left out of the congress say that the congress’s primary goal is to remove them and their influence from leadership roles in Fatah.

Abbas looks forward to working with Trump, hopes he’ll solve ‘Palestine issue’ (The Times of Israel)
But he stressed again he “will not recognize a Jewish state,” and said Palestinian recognition of Israel “will not last forever” if Israel does not recognize a Palestinian state.

Israeliska ministern Yuval Steinitz hade beska kommentarer efter Abbas tal: Abbas är Israels fiende nummer 1 som vill förinta Israel.
Israeli minister: More than Arafat, Abbas is Israel's 'number one' enemy (Jerusalem Post)
"Abu Mazen [Abbas] is talking about desisting from recognizing Israel, but he will never really recognize [Israel's] right to exist or the right for the self-determination of a Jewish homeland," Steinitz said.

“Let's not kid ourselves. From an ideological perspective, Abbas is the number one enemy of the very existence of Israel, even more so than Arafat,” he asserted.
